My great-great grandmother, the wife of John Frank Hook, is recored as having been named Martha Hill, under "John F. Hook" in the Compendium of History Reminiscence & Biography of Western Nebraska, published 1909:
Martha Hill Hook was born in Illinois in 1838, and died in Nebraska in 1880. Her parents were pioneers of Illinois, and later were among the early settlers of Iowa. Nine children were born to Mr. and Mrs. Hook: Ellen, wife of Joseph Jackson, Roswell; Ida married to Harris Johnson; William, Nettie, wife of Rollin Poland; and Etta, wife of George Barnes.
However, my mother's notes refer to her as Angelina. Census records indicate that her first name was Martha, and her middle initial A. Presumably, Angelina was her middle name, and the name she was called by within the family. Her husband is recorded in the Compendium as having been John F. Hook, when the family always called him Frank, and census records list him variously as Francis or Frank. We have a photograph of Frank, but, unfortunately, none of Martha.
According to my mother's notes, Angelina was born in 1837, of Pennsylvania Dutch extraction. She and Frank had the following children: Isaac (Ike), b. 1856; Ella, b. 1858; Alice; Willie; twins Nettie Belle and Ettie Nell; and my maternal great-grandmother, Ida Isadore Hook, who married Harris Johnson.
Martha Angeline Hill is said, in Kerri's family tree at RootsWeb.com, to have been born in Illinois around 1839, married June 20, 1855, and to have died October 7, 1881 in Hamilton County, Iowa, at Oakwood Cemetery, Hamilton County, Iowa. The reference given for her birth is the 1860 Iowa Census of Hamilton County, Iowa. Her parents' names are unknown.
Here is a link to a copy of the (183 KB) relevant page of the 1860 Census, for Hamilton County, Iowa, where the family is listed under her husband, Francis Hook. Martha A. Hook, age 21, was born in Illinois, and her children, Amanda, age 3, and Isaac D., age 1.5, were both born in Iowa.
(Interestingly, the next entry, not in alphabetical order - next door neighbor? - is listed as Jane Hill, age 54, born in Virginia. Could this have been Martha's mother, by any chance? Her birth name was Hill. Arguing against this idea is the apparent fact that Jane Hill was living with her sons Christopher, age 26, and James, age 18, but both are listed with birthplaces of Virginia. If Martha Angelina were Jane Hill's daughter, her birthplace would likely have been the same as both brothers, since they were born in the same state as each other, and her age was intermediate between theirs. So, probably not.)
Here is a link to a copy of an image of the relevant page of the 1870 Census of Hamilton County, Iowa, listed under her husband's name, Francis Hook. Martha A., age 32, female, white, occupation Keeping House, born Illinois. Children Mary (?) E., age 13, Isaac, age 11, Ida, age 7, Roswell, 5, and Eldora (?), age 2, female, all born in Iowa.
Angelina died in 1880, when Ida was 17.
