Hannah Clarke/Clark/Clarck

1802-1880

It is difficult to determine which of the three spellings of "Clarke" is most correct.

Hannah was the daughter of Judy Burgess and David Clarke, of North Carolina. Judy was reportedly a full-blooded Cherokee. Judy and David had seven children: Jinny, Kit, Sally, Bets, Nance, Hannah, and a baby who died in infancy.

Hannah was born about 1802 in North Carolina. She and John Ballard had ten children. The first four were born in Tennessee, the next three in Kentucky, their eighth in Illinois, the ninth in Missouri, and the tenth and last in Iowa. Here is a list of their names and dates:

  2. James Ballard , b .1822 or 3; d. Jan. 8, 1835 (?)
  3. Eliza Jane Ballard, b. April 17, 1830
  4. William Ballard, b. 1825 or 1826; d. before 1846
  5. John Ballard b. about 1828
  6. Maryann Ballard b. about 1830, d. about 1840-5
  7. Ithema Ballard (my great-great-grandmother), b. about 1835
  8. Minerva Ballard, b. Nov. 25, 1837; d. Dec. 5, 1920
  9. George Washington Ballard, b. November 27, 1840
  10. Sarah Ballard, b. July 19, 1846
