Message: I have a khaki cotton twill hat I'd like to dye a deep orange color for a costume I'm making. Would fiber reactive dye still be a good choice if I'm only dyeing this one garment?

Fiber reactive dye is the best choice for cotton. Look for Dylon Permanent Dye or Tulip Permanent Dye at a fabric store or a crafts store, and follow the package instructions as closely as possible. This is a higher quality, longer-lasting dye than the all-purpose dye you can find in grocery stores, and it's not a bit more difficult to use, and usually not  significantly more expensive.

For a garment that you will wear only once, with no chance of ever wanting to wash it or wear it again, it doesn't matter if you use a dye that fades quickly, such as Rit all-purpose dye. Of course, it's important even with all-purpose dye to wash out as much of the excess dye as possible, so the dry color doesn't rub off onto your skin, other clothing, or furniture. The only reason to choose an all-purpose dye over a fiber reactive dye is if your local shops do not carry Dylon or Tulip dyes, only Rit dyes, or if you're dyeing something that is a blend of cotton and nylon, or cotton and wool.

Note that the orange you produce will not be as bright, when you dye a khaki-colored hat, as it would if you were to dye a white hat. Khaki would not be a good start for a bright orange, but it should be fine for a deep orange.
